Hidrostal L20K centrifugal pumps for Noorderlegmeer temporary pump installation

The old Noorderlegmeer water pumping station – which dates from the end of the 19^th century – no longer came up to modern standards and so Waternet, commissioned by the Amstel, Gooi and Vecht water board, has started the construction of a new pumping station. The works started at the beginning of June with the positioning of a temporary pump installation that will take over from the old pumping station until the new pumping station comes into operation in October 2012.

Greater capacity

The new water pumping station will be equipped with two concrete split-case pumps with a total capacity of approximately 16,000 m³/hour. This is considerably more than the current capacity, as a result of which the drainage of the Westwijk-West residential district of Amstelveen will be improved. In addition, the new pumping station will also take over part of the role of the water pumping station in the nearby Bovenkerkerpolder.

Temporary pump installation

The project is being carried out by main contractor Aannemingsmaatschappij VOBI B.V. from Vinkeveen and subcontractor Bosma & Bronkhorst from Zaandam. For the temporary pump installation installed by VOBI, Eekels has supplied three Hidrostal L20K centrifugal impeller pumps (240 kW / 994 rpm) with various options. The pump motors are thus equipped with an oil cooling jacket and various motor protection equipment such as PTC thermistors, water-in-oil detection, an internal float switch and bearing temperature protection.

Preserving the historical outflow channel

Although the old pumping station itself will be demolished, the open riveted steel outflow channel dating from 1884 will be preserved for posterity. This piece of Dutch industrial heritage is in fact a national monument. The outflow channel will be partially dismantled and put into storage so that the new discharge pipelines can be laid. Then the monumental outflow channel will be restored in all its former glory on new supports.
